Writing from The Heart

"Writing from The Heart" is a workshop on creative writing, creative drawing, and creative drama. There are three available versions of this workshop: one for beginners on the secondary, tertiary, and graduate levels, and another for practitioners. A third version of this workshop is designed as an outreach program to disadvantaged and underserved audiences such as the disabled, the poor and the marginalized, victims of human trafficking, battered women and abused children, drug rehabilitation center residents, child combatants, children in conflict with the law, prisoners, and gang leaders. This third version incorporates creativity and problem awareness, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, trauma therapy, and peacemaking.

Workshop Exercise

"Automatic Writing"

Do not plan to write anything in particular. Clear your mind and poise your pen over a blank sheet of paper or sit in front of your computer with a blank page on Microsoft Word.

Relax, center yourself, let down your defense mechanisms

Begin writing/encoding--just move your pen or your fingers on the keyboard--and allow material to flow from you, even if you start out by producing nonsense or gibberish.

As long as you allow words to flow freely, you will find yourself authoring the beginning of an interesting poem, short story, essay, novel, or play.

This is how the world was created after all--not through deliberate planning but through the spontaneous emanation of light and truth.
